Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Murkomen claimed that Gachagua’s approach to addressing alcoholism in the Mt Kenya region was driven more by tribal politics and personal interests than sound public policy.
He alleged that the former deputy president was “obsessed with tribalism” and used the anti-alcohol campaign as a tool to settle scores and extract money from businesses.
According to Murkomen, Gachagua’s engagement with companies involved in the manufacture and sale of alcohol amounted to extortion rather than structured regulation.
He argued that the former DP failed to grasp basic principles of governance and policy formulation, describing him as one of the most ineffective public servants to hold high office.
“I have never seen a more incompetent public servant who understood no single subject in government policy,” Murkomen said, escalating tensions between leaders aligned to the Kenya Kwanza administration and those linked to Gachagua.
The remarks come against the backdrop of sustained political fallout following Gachagua’s removal from office, which has continued to polarise opinion within the Mt Kenya region and the broader national political arena.
Alcohol abuse has long been a sensitive social and economic issue in the region, with previous government interventions drawing mixed reactions from residents, traders, and civil society groups.
Gachagua has previously defended his record, maintaining that his actions were aimed at protecting families and restoring social order in affected communities.
