Betty Maina Hits Back at Gachagua Over Yesterday's Chaos, States the Following

Women rep Betty Maina hit back at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after a heated exchange on X over police conduct in Kirinyaga County.

She accused Gachagua of personal attacks and warned him to stop mentioning her name. Maina said she was holding a peaceful empowerment program in Makomboki when chaos broke out nearby.

She claimed that Murang'a Woman Representative Muthoni Marubu was attacked in Gachagua's presence during earlier events. Maina said Gachagua failed to condemn the incident and instead fueled tension.

She warned that she could reveal private messages if the attacks continued. Maina said she refused manipulation when Gachagua was Deputy President.

The online post also dragged Inspector General Douglas Kanja into the dispute. Maina told Gachagua to keep Kanja out of his political fights. She said the police chief was not a puppet and should not be dragged into personal vendettas. She accused Gachagua of blaming others for his political struggles.

Earlier on the same day Gachagua issued a long statement targeting IG Kanja. He accused the police boss of surrendering command of the National Police Service to politicians. Gachagua said the service had become a source of fear instead of safety. He questioned whether there were parallel commands within the police.

Gachagua detailed an alleged attack on his convoy on January 9 2026 in Kirinyaga County. He claimed a special squad in civilian clothes commandeered police vehicles from Baricho and Wang'uru stations.

He alleged the squad was under an officer attached to the Murang'a women representative. He linked the officer to past clashes in Murang'a and Narok.

According to Gachagua the squad mounted a roadblock near Kagio with county askaris. He said his convoy was hit with tear gas and live ammunition.

One guard was injured vehicles were damaged and media equipment was stolen. He said they later reached Kagio using another route and addressed supporters peacefully.

Gachagua said another police unit watched the meeting from a distance and allowed it to proceed. He demanded arrests of the officers and charges over robbery with violence. He said he was embarrassed as a neighbor of the IG and demanded answers on who truly commands the police.

Supporters gathered despite tension while leaders traded claims online and residents watched events unfold with concern across the county as calls for accountability grew louder through the night and morning hours today quietly nationwide Kenya
