Tragic Road Accident on Kericho-Nyamira Highway Claims Several Lives in Nyamira County

Nyamira County is reeling after a deadly road accident near Ekerenyo along the Kericho-Nyamira Highway on the night of Saturday, December 13, 2025.

Reports indicate that a 14-seater Public Service Vehicle (PSV) belonging to Quarser Sacco collided head-on with a trailer, leaving at least six people dead and several others injured.

According to eyewitness accounts, the trailer was traveling from Ekerenyo while the PSV was coming from Ikonge when the two vehicles collided violently.

The impact was so severe that emergency teams were immediately deployed to the scene to rescue survivors and transport the injured to Nyamira County Referral Hospital.

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo expressed his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.

“I have learnt with deep shock of the road accident at Ri’Arani, Ekerenyo Ward, along Kisii-Chemosit Road. Tonight, it has claimed lives and left others injured. Our teams at the Nyamira County Referral Hospital are working around the clock to save those who were hurt. My deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones,” the governor stated.

Local authorities confirmed that several passengers were rushed to hospitals for urgent medical attention. The exact number of casualties is still being determined as rescue operations continue.

The scene of the accident was described as gruesome, with debris scattered across the highway, causing traffic disruptions and distress among motorists and local residents.

Tragically, this accident occurred just hours after former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo lost his life in a separate road collision on the busy Nairobi-Nakuru Highway. The 64-year-old politician was alone in his car, driving to his rural home in Lugari, when his Mercedes-Benz collided head-on with a Climax bus.

According to the bus driver, Jirongo entered the highway from a petrol station and moved into the wrong lane after encountering traffic.

“The Mercedes was coming from a petrol station as I headed toward Busia from Nairobi. He didn’t give way and ended up in my lane. We collided head-on. I tried to avoid the crash, but it happened too fast. I didn’t know who it was until the police arrived,” the driver recounted.

Road safety experts say these accidents highlight ongoing challenges on Kenya’s highways, including reckless driving, poor road conditions, and inadequate awareness among some drivers about traffic regulations.

They urge motorists to exercise caution, especially during night hours, and call for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies.

The Nyamira accident has sparked concern among residents and officials, prompting calls for immediate measures to improve road safety.

Local leaders emphasize the need for proper signage, street lighting, and public awareness campaigns to reduce the risk of such catastrophic collisions in the future.

Emergency response teams have been commended for their prompt intervention, which saved lives and provided urgent medical care to those injured.

Authorities are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the condition of the vehicles and driver conduct, to establish accountability and prevent future incidents.
