The International Criminal Court (ICC) based in The Hague has officially begun a preliminary review into the deaths that happened after the election in Tanzania.
This announcement was made on November 4, 2025 after the President Suluhu was controversially re-elected for a second term.
The ICC decision to get involved follows strong pressure from both local and international human rights groups.
Opposition party in Tanzania CHADEMA, has been very active in demanding that the United Nations and the ICC look into what it calls the "mass killings" of supporters and other civilians by state security forces during the protests.
President Suluhu was declared the winner with over 97% of the vote which sparked violent demonstrations in several major cities.
These protests were met with a harsh response from security forces of Tanzania.
Although the President's government has not officially stated how many people died, the opposition claims that more than 1,000 people were killed.
The prosecutor's office will now start collecting evidence to see if there is enough reason to move forward with formal charges against those suspected of being responsible for the violence after the election.
