Kevin, a hardworking casual laborer from western Kenya, says he met Sharon in 2018 through mutual friends. At the time, Sharon had just completed her secondary school education but lacked the finances needed to join college.

According to Kevin, their relationship quickly became serious. He says Sharon often assured him that once she completed her studies, they would settle down, build a home, and support each other through life’s struggles. Motivated by these promises, Kevin began making major sacrifices that would eventually change the course of his life.
“I genuinely believed she was my future wife,” Kevin painfully narrates. “Whenever she lacked fees, I struggled to find money because I did not want her education interrupted. I thought we were fighting for our future together.”
As college expenses continued rising, Kevin says he was forced to make painful financial decisions. After exhausting his savings and borrowing money from friends and relatives, he eventually sold the only small piece of land he had inherited from his late father.
“That land was all I had,” Kevin says. “My family warned me not to sell it, but I believed I was investing in our future. I imagined we would one day buy a bigger property together after she got a good job.”
Friends and relatives reportedly questioned Kevin’s decision, warning him that relationships sometimes change once circumstances improve. However, Kevin remained hopeful, insisting Sharon was different and genuinely loved him.
During her years in college, Kevin says he continued supporting her in every possible way. Apart from paying school fees, he also helped with rent, upkeep money, and shopping whenever he could afford it.
