Githurai Mum and 7-Year-Old Daughter Spend 3 Weeks on Rooftop After Eviction Over KSh4,600 Rent Debt

An eight-month pregnant mother and her seven-year-old daughter have endured weeks of unimaginable hardship after they were locked out of their home in Githurai over a KSh4,600 rent arrears.

Sarah Kavenya and her young daughter, Prudence, reportedly found themselves with nowhere else to go after their landlord barred them from accessing their rented house.

The family had accumulated two months of rent arrears, with the monthly rent reportedly standing at KSh2,300.

Instead of finding another place to stay, the heavily pregnant mother and her daughter began sleeping on the rooftop of the building where they had previously lived.

For nearly three weeks, the rooftop became their temporary shelter, with the family reportedly having only a mattress, a blanket and their clothes.

The situation came to public attention after a neighbour from a nearby building noticed the mother and daughter spending their nights on the rooftop and became concerned about their welfare.

The neighbour reportedly contacted well-wisher Derrick Mbugua, who decided to visit the building at night to establish what was happening.

What he found left him deeply concerned. Mbugua reportedly discovered seven-year-old Prudence lying alone on a mattress while waiting for her mother to return. READ FULL STORY.
