Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has shifted his legal strategy in the ongoing battle over his impeachment, abandoning efforts to reclaim his former office and instead demanding a lucrative retirement package worth tens of millions of shillings.

The dramatic revelation emerged during proceedings at the Milimani High Court on Monday, where a three-judge bench disclosed the extensive list of benefits and privileges Gachagua is seeking following his removal from office.

The bench, led by Justice Eric Ogolla alongside Justices Anthony Mrima and Freda Mugambi, revealed that the former Deputy President is now pursuing compensation and retirement benefits typically accorded to senior state officers who leave office under normal circumstances.

The development marks a significant turn in a case that has dominated Kenya’s political landscape for months. 

Rather than focusing on reinstatement, Gachagua’s legal team is now seeking financial compensation and lifelong benefits, arguing that he is entitled to the package despite the circumstances surrounding his impeachment.
