"The Money You Waste Daily Can Fund Education" – UASU SG Tells Treasury CS Mbadi in Fiery Rebuke

Tensions between university lecturers and the government escalated Friday after Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) Secretary-General Dr. Constantine Wasonga slammed Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi over claims that Kenya can no longer sustain free education.

In a strongly worded statement delivered at the University of Nairobi, Wasonga dismissed Mbadi’s assertion that the State lacks funds to fully support public education.

He accused the government of mismanaging resources while starving crucial sectors like education.

“The money you waste per day can fund the whole education sector. There is money in Kenya,” Wasonga said bluntly, directing his message at CS Mbadi and the Treasury.

His remarks follow Treasury’s announcement that the government will now only manage Ksh.16,600 in capitation per secondary school student—down from the previous Ksh.22,000.

The move is expected to shift more financial pressure onto already burdened parents.

Wasonga, however, questioned the government’s priorities. He pointed out the opulence displayed in public service and political spending while public universities and students suffer. TO READ MORE, CLICK HERE.
