Speaking during a Sunday political rally on May 31, 2026, Kibet told supporters that leadership from Kenya’s western region should be given national consideration, arguing that Wetang’ula has the experience and political maturity required for the country’s top seat after Ruto’s term.
“Mimi nataka uongozi uje magharibi. Huyu Wetang’ula amekomaa kuwa rais wetu wa taifa la Kenya baada ya William Ruto,” Kibet said.
His remarks were met with mixed reactions from the crowd, with some cheering the endorsement while others appeared cautious about early succession politics within the ruling coalition.
Kibet further urged supporters to openly embrace Wetang’ula’s leadership ambitions, warning against political hesitation at a time when succession politics is gradually taking shape.
“Na mtoto anatunzwa nyumbani, anapendwa nyumbani. Mimi itakuwa ni aibu sana, mimi nisimame hapa alafu nyinyi mkose kushangilia Wetang’ula,” he added.
The endorsement is seen as one of the clearest public indications of internal succession positioning within the Kenya Kwanza alliance, where political actors have increasingly begun aligning themselves with possible post-2027 leadership scenarios.
Wetang’ula, who currently serves as Speaker of the National Assembly and ranks as the third most powerful state officer, has in recent months hinted at his broader political ambitions, suggesting that his long career in public service has prepared him for national leadership.
He has previously served as a Member of Parliament, Assistant Minister, Cabinet Minister, Senator, and now Speaker—positions he often cites as evidence of his readiness for higher office.
“Sasa mambo ya siasa, nimekuwa ordinary MP, nikakuwa assistant minister, nikakuwa minister, nikakuwa senator wenu, sasa niko Speaker, number three in Kenya,” Wetang’ula said in a recent address.
“Kweli nitakuwa wazimu kiasi gani kurudi nyuma kubishana kwa mambo madogo madogo,” he added.
Wetang’ula’s Rising National Profile
Wetang’ula’s growing national profile has fuelled speculation that he may be positioning himself for a future presidential bid, potentially after the 2027 General Election.
Political observers note that his recent public engagements have increasingly focused on unity, governance, and national leadership themes rather than parliamentary matters alone.
In earlier remarks made in Bungoma, the Speaker also signalled support for the broad-based political arrangement between Kenya Kwanza and opposition-linked factions, further cementing his role as a key figure in national political alignment discussions.
Kibet’s endorsement adds a new layer to Kenya’s evolving succession politics, especially within the ruling coalition, where competing regional interests and political alliances continue to shape future leadership conversations.
