Residents of Got Rateng village in Mbita were left in shock after a 48-year-old woman reportedly collapsed and died while with her 23-year-old lover on Friday morning.
According to police reports, the woman, who had been widowed for some years, was said to have been in a relationship with the young man for the past two years.
Locals noted that the affair began after the man “inherited” her following her husband’s death, in line with some Luo cultural practices of widow inheritance.
The events leading to the tragedy began earlier in the evening when the two lovers were seen drinking together. They later hired a boda boda rider to take them home.
