Peninah Opis: Kisumu Fishmonger Who Has Been Exporting Fish to Europe for Over a Decade

While many people see fish trading as a small-scale lakeside business, Peninah Opis has transformed it into an enterprise that reaches customers far beyond Kenya’s borders.

For more than a decade, the determined entrepreneur from Kisumu has been supplying fish to local institutions and exporting products to European markets, proving that dedication and persistence can turn a modest venture into a thriving business.

Every day begins before sunrise for Opis. By 5 a.m., she is already heading to the shores of Lake Victoria, where she personally inspects the morning catch brought in by local fishermen.

Years of experience have given her a keen eye for quality, enabling her to select the best fish for her growing customer base.

Her main product is tilapia, one of the most sought-after fish species from Lake Victoria. However, her business has expanded to include other varieties such as Nile perch and omena, depending on customer demand.

Through careful sourcing, proper preservation techniques and reliable distribution channels, she has managed to maintain consistent quality standards that keep clients returning.

“I started this business 10 years ago and have never looked back,” Opis says. “It’s my livelihood, and I enjoy what I do.”

What began as a relatively small operation took an unexpected turn when one of her regular customers relocated to another area.

Rather than ending their business relationship, the customer continued ordering fish from her. Satisfied with her products and service, the client recommended her to friends and associates, creating a chain of referrals that steadily expanded her market.

Those recommendations opened new opportunities, eventually helping her reach customers in distant locations and laying the groundwork for exports beyond Kenya.

Today, her products serve hotels, schools, hospitals and individual buyers, while international orders have enabled her business to tap into European markets.

Building such a network was not without challenges. Like many entrepreneurs, Opis had to navigate stiff competition, fluctuating fish supplies and changing customer preferences.

She believes survival in business requires constant innovation and a clear understanding of market dynamics.

“You have to know your competition and keep innovating,” she explains.

Her success has also depended on sound financial management. According to Opis, many promising businesses fail because owners do not properly manage profits, plan for growth or prepare for difficult periods.

She credits careful budgeting and disciplined reinvestment for helping her enterprise remain stable and continue expanding over the years.

Beyond generating income for herself, her business supports local fishermen and others involved in the fish supply chain.

By purchasing directly from fishing communities, she contributes to livelihoods around Lake Victoria while connecting local products to national and international markets.

Despite reaching significant milestones, Opis believes her journey is far from complete. She remains focused on expanding her operations, strengthening her export network and exploring new opportunities within the fisheries sector.

Looking back, she attributes her achievements to vision, resilience and persistence. While many challenges have emerged over the last decade, she refused to give up, choosing instead to adapt and keep moving forward.

Her story serves as a powerful example of how determination, innovation and a commitment to quality can transform a simple idea into a successful enterprise.

From the shores of Lake Victoria to customers thousands of kilometres away in Europe, Peninah Opis has demonstrated that local businesses can compete on the global stage when driven by passion and perseverance.
