Panic in Nanyuki as Massive Night Fire Reduces Busy Market to Ashes, Traders Count Millions in Losses

Hundreds of traders in Nanyuki woke up to heartbreak on Sunday morning after a massive overnight fire swept through the bustling New Market, destroying businesses, merchandise and property worth millions of shillings.

The inferno, which broke out late on Saturday night, quickly spread across the crowded trading centre, turning what had been a vibrant marketplace into a scene of devastation.

Witnesses said towering flames lit up the night sky as desperate traders and residents watched helplessly while years of hard work went up in smoke.

According to eyewitness accounts, the fire moved rapidly from one section of the market to another, fuelled by closely built stalls and highly flammable materials stored inside the structures.

Within a short period, dozens of business premises had been engulfed, leaving little chance for traders to salvage their goods.

Panic gripped the area as thick smoke billowed into the sky, attracting hundreds of residents who gathered near the market to witness the unfolding disaster.

Some traders attempted to rescue their merchandise, but the intensity of the flames forced many to retreat for safety.

Emergency response teams were eventually deployed to contain the blaze. Personnel from the Laikipia County Government, the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK), and officers from the Kenya Air Force based at Nanyuki Air Base joined efforts to fight the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.

Despite the coordinated response, several affected traders expressed frustration, claiming the emergency intervention came too late to save many businesses.

Some argued that faster deployment of firefighting equipment could have significantly reduced the extent of the destruction.

"I have lost everything I invested over the last five years," lamented one trader as he surveyed the charred remains of his stall. "This market was my only source of income. I do not know where to begin again."

Others described the loss as devastating, noting that many traders had stocked up goods in preparation for increased business activity in the coming weeks.

For many families, the market served as the primary source of livelihood, making the disaster both an economic and emotional blow.

Fortunately, authorities confirmed that no deaths or serious injuries had been reported during the incident. However, the financial impact is expected to be enormous, with traders facing losses running into millions of shillings.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations have been launched to establish what triggered the blaze.

Fire experts and security officers are expected to examine the scene and gather evidence that could help determine whether the incident resulted from an electrical fault, negligence or other factors.

The New Market, located near the Mwisho wa Reli area in Nanyuki Town, is one of the region's key commercial centres, serving thousands of customers daily.

The destruction has once again renewed concerns about fire preparedness and safety measures in Kenya's major trading centres.
