The family of former Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli is in mourning following the death of his mother, Suzana Magufuli, who passed away after a prolonged illness.

According to family members, Suzana died on the evening of Monday, May 25, 2026, at her residence in Chato District, bringing to an end a life that witnessed the rise of one of Tanzania’s most influential political figures.

News of her passing quickly spread across Tanzania and beyond, drawing messages of sympathy from friends, relatives, political leaders, and ordinary citizens who remember the legacy left behind by the late President Magufuli.

The death was confirmed by Magufuli’s daughter, Jesca Magufuli, during an interview with local media.

Speaking with visible emotion, she revealed that the family was still coming to terms with the painful loss of a woman who had been a pillar of strength to generations of relatives and community members.

“Our grandmother, Suzana Mussa, passed away at around 7 p.m. at her home in Chato after a long illness. The family will communicate further funeral arrangements. The Lord has given and the Lord has taken away,” Jesca said.

Shortly after confirming the news, she shared an emotional tribute on social media, describing the deep sadness that had engulfed the family following the loss of their beloved matriarch.

In her message, Jesca reflected on Suzana’s life as a devoted mother, grandmother, and respected elder whose wisdom and guidance shaped the lives of many people around her.

She noted that the family was united in grief as they remembered a woman whose kindness and resilience left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.

“Siku ya leo, siku ya Juma tatu tarehe 25 May kwa majonzi makubwa na simanzi iliyotanda mioyoni mwetu tunasikitika kuwajulisha ndugu, jamaa na marafiki, na Watanzania wote kwa ujumla kuwa aliyekuwa mama mzazi wa Rais wetu mpendwa Hayati Dkt. John Pombe Magufuli amefariki dunia,” part of her statement read.

The passing of Suzana Magufuli has revived memories of the late President Magufuli, who served as Tanzania’s Head of State and became known for his strong leadership style and ambitious development agenda.

Throughout his political career, Magufuli often spoke about the values of hard work, discipline, and humility, principles many supporters believe were instilled in him during his upbringing.

Residents of Chato and neighboring communities described Suzana as a humble woman who remained closely connected to her roots despite her son's prominence on the national stage. Many recalled her generosity, warmth, and willingness to support those in need.

Community leaders in the Geita region said her death represents a significant loss not only to her family but also to residents who frequently sought her counsel and encouragement.

Several local leaders praised her for raising children who contributed significantly to public service and national development.

As condolences continued to pour in, many Tanzanians took to social media to express solidarity with the Magufuli family.

Messages highlighted Suzana’s role as a mother whose influence extended far beyond her household, touching communities across the country through the legacy of her children and grandchildren.

Family sources indicated that funeral arrangements are currently underway and that further details regarding burial plans will be communicated in the coming days.

Relatives, friends, and well-wishers have already begun gathering in Chato to offer support and participate in mourning activities.

For the Magufuli family, the loss marks another painful chapter following the death of former President John Magufuli.

Yet even amid grief, relatives have emphasized gratitude for Suzana’s long life and the values she passed on to future generations.
