John Marete: I Established WERU TV, Three Other Stations After Being Fired From Citizen TV

When John Marete walked out of Citizen TV in February 2016 after being among employees affected by a staff restructuring exercise, few could have predicted that the setback would become the foundation of one of Kenya’s most successful vernacular media enterprises.

Today, Marete is celebrated as the founder of multiple television and radio stations that have transformed regional broadcasting and created platforms that give local communities a stronger voice. 

His journey stands as a powerful example of resilience, entrepreneurship, and the ability to turn adversity into opportunity.

Born and raised in Meru County, Marete spent most of his formative years immersed in the culture and traditions of the Ameru community. 

His interest in media developed at a young age, inspiring him to pursue a degree in Mass Media and Film Production at Kenyatta University. 

After graduating in 2010, he spent nearly a year searching for employment before finally securing an opportunity at Citizen TV.
