Before becoming one of the most recognized figures in Kenya’s transport sector, he was just another young man from a humble background trying to survive in Nairobi.
Nelson Mwangi was born and raised in Kenya’s Central region in a modest family that struggled financially.
Despite the challenges at home, he worked hard in school and reportedly performed very well in his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations. WATCH VIDEO HERE.
Like many bright students from poor families, Mwangi dreamed of advancing his education and building a better future.

However, after completing high school, his hopes of joining university were crushed because his parents could not afford the required school fees.
Instead of giving up, he made the painful but necessary decision to leave home and travel to Nairobi in search of opportunities.
Life in the city, however, was far from easy.
Upon arriving in Nairobi, Nelson Mwangi quickly discovered that surviving in the capital without money, connections, or education sponsorship was extremely difficult. He was forced to take up any available job just to survive and put food on the table.
At one point, he reportedly roasted maize in Eastlands near Makadara Law Courts to earn a living. The work was difficult and the income small, but he remained determined to push through the hardships.
“I was brought up in a very poor family. Coming to Nairobi to look for a job was not easy and at one point I had to roast maize in Eastlands near Makadara law courts,” he once revealed in an interview.
Unlike many people who become discouraged by humble beginnings, Mwangi embraced every opportunity that came his way. WATCH VIDEO HERE.
Later, he secured a job as a lift attendant at a restaurant in Nairobi’s city center. Though the position appeared small and insignificant to many, he treated it seriously and worked with discipline and dedication.
Through hard work, patience, and commitment, he gradually rose through the ranks within the restaurant business until he eventually became an operations manager.
The Side Hustle That Changed His Life
Even while employed at the restaurant, Nelson Mwangi understood that employment alone might not fully transform his financial situation.

With growing responsibilities and bills to pay, he decided to venture into business on the side. WATCH VIDEO HERE.
He began purchasing a few matatus and personally managing them. At the time, Nairobi’s matatu industry was already known for disorder, recklessness, corruption, and poor customer service. Despite the difficulties, Mwangi saw an opportunity in the sector.
As his matatu business gradually expanded, he became more experienced in transport management and began understanding the weaknesses that had damaged the industry’s reputation for years.
Eventually, he made the bold decision to fully commit himself to the matatu business.
Birth of Super Metro
In 2013, Nelson Mwangi joined hands with thirteen other directors to establish Super Metro Company Limited.
The company was created with a vision of introducing professionalism, discipline, and proper business management into Kenya’s notoriously chaotic public transport industry.
At a time when many matatus were associated with rude conductors, dangerous driving, loud music, overcharging, and endless traffic offenses, Super Metro aimed to completely change the culture.
Under Mwangi’s leadership as chairman, the SACCO focused heavily on customer safety, discipline, professionalism, and proper staff management.
Over the years, Super Metro became widely respected by commuters because of its organized operations, cleaner vehicles, courteous staff, and relatively safer driving standards compared to many competitors.
Strict Rules and Professionalism
One of the major factors behind Super Metro’s success has been its strict recruitment and disciplinary procedures. WATCH VIDEO HERE.
According to Mwangi, the company takes hiring very seriously. Drivers and conductors are reportedly subjected to interviews before a panel and must present valid qualifications and certificates before being employed.
Successful applicants are also required to undergo probation before becoming fully accepted into the company.
The SACCO additionally enforces strict discipline among workers.
Conductors who overcharge passengers or mistreat customers reportedly face punishment, while drivers found overlapping on roads, over-speeding, carrying excess passengers, or driving under the influence risk suspension or expulsion from the company.
This professionalism helped Super Metro earn the trust of passengers at a time when many Kenyans had lost confidence in the matatu sector.
Transforming Nairobi’s Matatu Industry
Over the years, Super Metro has become one of the most recognizable public transport brands in Nairobi and its surrounding areas.
The company’s growth demonstrated that the matatu business could still operate profitably while maintaining discipline and respecting passengers.
Many commuters began preferring Super Metro because of the consistency in service, relatively disciplined crews, and efforts to prioritize passenger comfort and safety. WATCH VIDEO HERE.
Its success also challenged the long-standing belief that chaos and recklessness were necessary for survival in Kenya’s public transport sector.
Today, Super Metro is often cited as one of the few examples showing that professionalism and proper management can succeed even within one of Kenya’s most difficult industries.
A Story of Persistence and Faith
Despite his success, Nelson Mwangi has continued speaking openly about his humble beginnings and difficult journey.
From roasting maize on Nairobi streets to becoming chairman of one of Kenya’s most successful matatu companies, his story remains a powerful example of resilience and persistence.
Mwangi has often credited hard work, discipline, determination, and God’s favor for helping him rise from poverty into business success. WATCH VIDEO HERE.
His journey continues inspiring many young Kenyans struggling with unemployment, poverty, and hopelessness, proving that humble beginnings do not determine someone’s final destination.
