UDA Allies Turn to Rigathi Gachagua for Forgiveness Amid Ruto Loyalty Backlash in Mt Kenya

Several of President William Ruto’s former allies are reportedly reaching out to Democracy for Citizens’ Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, signaling a bid to mend past political rifts in the Mt Kenya region.

Edward Muriu, Director of Legal Affairs for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), confirmed that emissaries from the region are seeking Gachagua’s forgiveness and a second chance after prior disagreements.

“Members of UDA, particularly from the Mt Kenya region, are sending emissaries to Rigathi Gachagua, seeking forgiveness and a second chance,” Muriu said on Sunday.

He noted that Gachagua has a history of forgiving those who wronged him, which has encouraged reconciliation efforts.

Muriu also criticized President Ruto’s approach to loyalty, arguing that the assumption that loyalty can be bought rather than earned has contributed to tensions within his team.

“This mindset partly explains why Ruto did not resist past moves to impeach Gachagua, as he reportedly did not see it as a significant issue,” Muriu explained.

Observers note that the reconciliation efforts could have wider political implications, particularly in shaping alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Mt Kenya region, a traditional power base for both Gachagua and Ruto, has seen growing friction within UDA, with past grievances threatening to undermine cohesion.

The developments also revive speculation about a potential rapprochement between Gachagua and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Analysts suggest that renewed unity among key Mt Kenya leaders could solidify the region’s influence in national politics, especially in negotiating positions, cabinet appointments, and campaign strategies.

“The political landscape in Mt Kenya is dynamic. Past conflicts are giving way to strategic partnerships as leaders recalibrate their alliances,” Muriu added.
