Mwendwa went to the hospital on December 18, 2025, for what his family described as a minor surgical procedure involving his digestive system.
According to his brother, Mwendwa was in good spirits before leaving home.
“Christopher chatted with the rest of us and happily said he was rushing to the hospital,” his brother said.
Later that day, the family received a call from the hospital informing them that Mwendwa had been admitted and that they needed to speak with him.
At 12:17pm, the hospital called again, urgently asking the brother to go there immediately.
“They just told me my brother was in the hospital and they wanted to talk to me,” he recalled. “They did not explain what had happened.”
Between 3pm and 4pm, the family and Mwendwa’s colleagues were informed that he had died.
The Assistant Chairperson of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Mwaura Kabata, said the hospital was reluctant to explain what procedures had been carried out.
“We were informed that Chris had passed on, but the hospital officials were hesitant to give details of what had been done,” Kabata said.
Investigators have since recorded a statement from the doctor who attended to Mwendwa.
The doctor told the DCI that after administering 22 millilitres of propofol, Mwendwa’s blood pressure dropped, his heart rate increased, and he developed breathing problems that reduced oxygen supply.
A post-mortem conducted by a government pathologist reportedly indicated that Mwendwa may have been given an overdose of propofol.
A lawyer familiar with the report said it also raised concerns that some hospital documents may have been falsified.
Investigations further showed that Mwendwa was given amlodipine 5mg, hydralazine 25mg, and propofol during treatment.
The family and Mwendwa’s colleagues now plan to file a civil lawsuit for medical negligence against the hospital and the attending doctor.
The hospital has declined to release a detailed medical report, only confirming that Mwendwa died while receiving treatment.
A medical officer said the hospital would issue a report at a later date.
