Two Kirinyaga minors injured after being accused of taking merry-go-round funds

Two boys from Kiumbu village in Kirinyaga County were hospitalized after they were accused of taking money belonging to a local women’s group.

The money had been set aside for Christmas celebrations. The incident happened on Sunday afternoon and has raised concerns over the treatment of minors during community disputes.

According to information gathered from village authorities and relatives, the boys are aged 11 and 12.

One of them is a pupil at Kiumbu Primary School while the older boy reportedly dropped out of school two years ago. The two families live in the same neighbourhood.

Local administrator Henry Kariuki, the chief of Kiarukungu location, stated that he received a report that residents had raised an alarm after money went missing at the home of a man identified as Jackson Muchira.

The chief confirmed that the suspected amount was Ksh 30,000. Two mobile phones were also reported missing at the same time.

The chief said that when he arrived at the homestead, the boys admitted they had taken the money. He said that officers and village elders searched the area and recovered only Ksh 200 and two phones allegedly hidden by the boys.

The remaining amount was not found. The chief then took custody of the minors and escorted them to Wang’uru police station to record statements.

Relatives of the boys, however, claim that the children were assaulted before police officers arrived. Parents Wanja Munene and Mercy Wawira said their sons sustained serious injuries during the incident.

According to them, one child suffered injuries to his private parts and the other is believed to have fractured his arm. They allege the injuries occurred at the homestead of the complainant.

The parents accused police officers at the station of delaying medical attention for the boys. They claimed they requested medical help immediately but were told to wait while officers completed filing procedures.

The families said the minors were taken to Kimbimbi Sub-County Hospital only after journalists arrived and demanded action.

At the hospital, relatives questioned why the alleged assailant was also admitted under police guard instead of being placed in custody.

They expressed fears that the case might be mishandled. Some community members gathered outside the facility, demanding that the suspect be arrested and charged for assault.

Chief Kariuki acknowledged that force was used before he arrived at the homestead. He advised residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspected crimes through the appropriate channels.

The boys were later released from Wang’uru police station. According to officers who spoke informally, an agreement was reached that the complainant would provide medical support for the minors and refund the missing amount to the women’s group. Police did not issue an official public statement regarding the agreement.

The parents insist they still want legal action taken against the person they believe assaulted their children.

They said that while repayment of the money resolves the theft allegation, the violence against minors should be investigated separately.

A relative warned that the family would seek intervention from senior police commanders if no action is taken.
