Police launch hunt for suspects in Ndhiwa killing linked to revenge attack

Police in Ndhiwa Sub-County, Homa Bay County, have started a search for suspects believed to be involved in the killing of a 45-year-old man in Kochola village.

Authorities say the killing appears to be a revenge act connected to an earlier assault on children.

According to local administrators, the deceased man, identified as William Ojwang’, was attacked while attending a meeting with members of his group in South Kanyamwa Location.

Community reports indicate that a group of men stormed the meeting and attacked him using crude weapons, fatally injuring him.

Police believe the killing was motivated by allegations that Ojwang’ had previously assaulted three children belonging to one of the suspects.

The earlier incident reportedly happened the previous Tuesday in Kachwanya sub-location when the children were returning home from a funeral vigil.

Area chief Richard Omollo told local media that some individuals had been trailing Ojwang’ after receiving reports that he had harmed the children.

The chief said local leaders issued warnings against retaliatory attacks, but some residents ignored the advice.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that officers received intelligence that Ojwang’ would be attending a planned gathering in Kochola on the night of the attack. Security personnel were not present at the venue when the suspects reportedly arrived.

Witnesses who were present at the meeting said the attackers entered the venue and immediately targeted Ojwang’.

He was struck several times with pangas and other sharp weapons. He died at the scene before medical help could reach him. The suspects fled shortly after the attack.

Police officers who responded to distress calls found the victim lying at the site with deep cuts. His body was transferred to Ndhiwa Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where postmortem examinations are expected to determine the extent of the injuries and confirm the cause of death.

Homa Bay County security officials say a manhunt has been launched for the main suspects, who are believed to be well known in the community.

Investigating officers say they have already recorded statements from witnesses present during the attack. The chief urged residents to provide any information that may support the ongoing probe.

Authorities are calling for patience as investigations continue and have warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.

Police reminded the public that retaliation contributes to rising violence in the region and undermines ongoing crime-reduction efforts.

Local leaders expressed concern over the rising cases of mob attacks and revenge killings in Ndhiwa and neighbouring areas.

They urged community members to report grievances to authorities rather than resorting to violence. Some leaders added that children should not be used as justification for unlawful acts, even where assault allegations exist.

The deceased’s family members have demanded justice and urged police to speed up the investigation. They want all perpetrators arrested and charged. Family representatives say they plan to pursue the matter until the suspects are prosecuted.

Community elders have called for peaceful dispute-resolution mechanisms and emphasized the importance of protecting both children and adults from acts of violence.

Religious leaders in the area have also appealed for calm and encouraged dialogue rather than retaliation.

Police say the search for suspects is ongoing and will continue through the festive period. Security patrols in Ndhiwa have been increased to prevent more retaliatory attacks. Officers warned that anyone found shielding suspects will be treated as an accomplice.

County officials say the killings highlight an urgent need for community sensitization on legal procedures in dealing with assault and other criminal accusations.

Police reminded residents that suspects should be reported, arrested, and prosecuted through the court system instead of being subjected to mob justice.
