Kanchory Warns ODM Against Backing Ruto, Says Party Still Strong Enough to Field Its Own Candidate

Saitabao Ole Kanchory has once again sparked debate within Kenya’s political circles after warning that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) could lose its identity if it chooses to support President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.

According to him, the party has spent decades building its brand, its structures, and its influence across the country, and surrendering that space would only weaken it.

Kanchory, a former campaign manager for Raila Odinga, said ODM remains one of the most recognised political movements in Kenya.

He argued that the party has survived many storms because of its loyal supporters and strong national presence.

For that reason, he said, ODM should not shy away from presenting its own presidential candidate in the next general election.

He reminded Kenyans of Raila Odinga’s final public message to the party before taking up his African Union role.

According to Kanchory, Raila’s last words were simple but powerful: “Who says ODM cannot field a candidate?”

He said this statement should guide the party as it prepares for 2027, adding that Raila was making it clear that ODM’s future should not rely on partnerships that compromise its voice.

Kanchory further stated that if ODM decides to support President Ruto, it would not only confuse its supporters but also signal the end of the movement as an independent political force.

He believes that ODM’s strength lies in offering a real alternative and giving its followers a reason to stay united.

He added that ODM still enjoys wide support across different regions despite recent political shifts.

According to him, Kenyans who have stood with the party over the years are still waiting to see ODM chart its own path instead of merging its identity with another political camp.
