A 21-year-old man, Kelvin Oduor, also known as Kevo, was found dead inside a toilet at the Kisumu Central Police Station under unclear circumstances.
Police say the young man appeared to have hanged himself, though investigations are still ongoing to determine how he got the rope.
Oduor had been arrested on Monday after a failed robbery in Kisumu’s Central Business District. The incident caused panic among traders along Otieno Oyoo Street as gunfire filled the air.
Witnesses said Oduor and two accomplices were carrying a bulky bag when police on patrol approached them.
The suspects fled, and Oduor reportedly ran into the Patel Samaj Temple compound, where he held a security guard at gunpoint, stole his phone and valuables, and tied him up with a piece of cloth.
Police surrounded the area as Oduor climbed onto a rooftop and fired at officers below. After a tense standoff, officers managed to arrest him and recovered an AK-47 rifle, believed to have been used in other robberies in the city.
Two of his partners escaped and are still being pursued by the police.
After his arrest, Oduor was taken to a hospital for treatment before being charged in court on Tuesday, October 30, 2025.
The court ordered that he be held at Kisumu Central Police Station for 14 days while investigations continued. However, on Friday morning, he was discovered dead inside the cell’s toilet.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) visited the scene to collect evidence before the body was moved to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for a postmortem.
Human rights groups have raised concerns over the growing number of suspects dying in police custody.
They are calling for transparent investigations to ensure justice for the victims and accountability for officers. The Kisumu Central Police Station has not yet issued an official statement regarding Oduor’s death.
