Ruto Govt Sacks Senior Official Days After Being Raided Over Graft

The government has cancelled the appointment of Josephat Kabeabea as the Chairperson of the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA), only a few weeks after he was linked to a major bribery scandal.

The move came shortly after the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) raided his home, a development that attracted national attention.

According to a notice issued by Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui, the decision was made under the powers granted by the Anti-Counterfeit Act.

The notice explained that Kabeabea’s role as both a board member and chairperson officially ended on November 28.

Sources within the ministry said the step was taken to protect the credibility of the agency during ongoing investigations.

Kabeabea’s troubles began on November 14, when EACC officers stormed his residence over claims that he demanded a Ksh15 million bribe from a businessman.

My earlier reporting on the raid helped highlight how the case unfolded, and these latest documents appear to build on that timeline.

Investigators said the first incident involved a Chinese trader accused of selling counterfeit goods. The trader reported that Kabeabea demanded Ksh5 million to avoid arrest, later lowering the figure several times until it reached Ksh150,000.

The money was allegedly to be sent to a phone number belonging to his driver. CCTV footage placed Kabeabea at the trader’s premises on the days leading up to the complaint, strengthening the case against him.

Another company also came forward, claiming that in October, Kabeabea asked for Ksh10 million. The firm reportedly paid Ksh8 million after receiving threats that their operations would be shut down.

Kabeabea, a former MP for Tigania East, is not new to controversy. During the 2022 campaigns, his car was set on fire by unidentified youths.

After losing the election, he made a comeback when President William Ruto appointed him ACA chair in February 2023.

After his arrest, the Director of Public Prosecutions allowed charges to proceed. Kabeabea later appeared before the Milimani Anti-Graft Court, where he was charged under the Anti-Bribery Act.
